Relate My Style

Style that you can relate to. I share outfits that I wear and things of fashion that I adore. I believe a well dressed world is a happy world.
Heyo! Another sporadic outfit post! I was in NY this past weekend with the boyfriend and he was kind enough to snap a picture of me on day 1! 3 cheers for Dan (hip hip hooray!). Anyway, this outfit was perfect for the unrealistically hot weather. A skirt from Nümph, a bandeau and a top from Urban Outfitters. The bag is Cole Haan and the shoes are Steve madden. It was nice because I get so sick of wearing tank tops every day all Summer, so this is a good variation, the lace keeps things cool while still allowing you to wear a sleeve. Of course I mixed patterns because, why wouldn’t I?! The necklace is from Targe boutique (Target) and the bandana is some random find from a weird store where they sold Pez and lipgloss in bracelets, (Top Shop? No). Also the cross body bag is great for vacay because it keeps things close and forces you to only bring the essentials. There you have it lovers!

Hello all! Today I will be discussing trends. I always hear people saying “I wish I could pull that off” or “I don’t think that trend would work on me”. This makes me sad to hear, because I think everyone can make a trend work for them. You may not be able to wear head-to-toe lace, but I think that’s for the best… I will be focusing on one of my favorite new trends, neon. Since most people won’t do what I do and wear 4 neons and 3 patterns at the same time like an escaped mental patient, I think the best way to try a trend is to start with something small, like sunglasses, a necklace or a thin belt, like the ones pictured above. This gives you the opportunity to try it out and get more comfortable with the idea, and you won’t make a huge investment in it if you find that you don’t like the trend. This also gives you some time to see what you would pair other colors with it and how you will form the trend in to your wardrobe, so if you move on to something more substantial, you’ll already know how to wear it. A little bigger step in to it is go with a separate, like a skirt or shorts. Then you can do a more tame top and move on from there. This way you are really trying the neon trend but if you are a newbie neoner you won’t feel entirely neon and worry you look  like those sad kids at Disney World wearing the lime green shirts with their parent’s phone number on them, the poor dears. If you want to dive right in to the trend go with a bright dress. This means your whole look is neon and you are comfortable with dressing in it and accessorizing it. Some times it is good to just go balls to the wall and just do it, to get over your fear of it. But, in case you need it… A last neon resort, find shoes or a purse that follow the trend, that way you are trying it, but in the most mild way possible, which might be the best idea for you. If you are too nervous because some fool once told you your bright orange leggings where ugly when you were 9 and you’ve been scarred ever since, these things happen. You are the judge of how you want to try a trend. The most important thing about the neon trend is what you pair it with and wear it with pride! That’s a HUGE thing when trying a trend, just wear it and don’t worry about how people are looking at you. Have you ever looked at someone and been like “ugh, she is wearing floral, gross, she looks looks like a total idiot” no, and if so, you’re probably a bully, stop that. It’s totally a mental thing for people, so just don’t worry about it and try it out!

It’s baby’s first DIY project post! HOORAY! I have been so bored with some of my furniture lately. Being 23 and not having billions of dollars to spend on super cool furniture is kind of a downer. BUT, on the plus side, you wouldn’t want to do this sweet project with a billion dollar coffee table, so there is a plus side of having to buy a 40$ table from Target. I got this idea that it would be fun to put a little pattern on my boring coffee table. I figured the easiest way to do it was to buy one of those crazy wall decals from Target and spray paint over it. I chose a tree. I had to (with the help of my crafty/tiny handed roommate) cut the decal out because there was a clear coat on the back of it so the tree wouldn’t have been perfectly shaped. Then I had to scrub the table top down with this stuff called TSP (Trisodium Phosphate), it gets rid of grease and other such things, so the paint would stick. Side story: While I was scrubbing it down, using a vase as my TSP bucket, my roommate was reading the warnings to me and it said “Do not allow TSP to come in contact with glass.” So after a little panic because I was sure I was going to get legionnaires or something, and noticing it ate through my rubber glove, it was onward with the project. Then we cut some branches and replaced them on the tree to fit it to the table. We stuck the sticker on to the table, spray painted it with this lovely blue, waited 30 minutes for it to dry a little, then peeled the sticker off. I waited until morning to put the table top back on to make sure it was dry. There you have it! Now I have a super cool coffee table and only had to buy the terrifying TSP, the decal and the spray paint! Pretty sweet and pretty cheap!

Alright all, we are going to evaluate a certain situation… The “I have nothing to wear” dilemma. My cousin recently had her 24th birthday (HAPPY BIRTHDAY ERIN!) and before I went shopping for her present I had a conversation with her about how she feels like she is in a wardrobe rut, we’ve all been there. Although I have billions (that’s an approximate number) of articles of clothing in my closet, there are some days where I just can’t find anything I want to wear. So this conversation with my cousin got me thinking, I wanted to buy her stuff that I typically wouldn’t buy her just so she would fit some newer and different items in to her wardrobe. I have a quick fix for the bored with your wardrobe blues, accessories. I’m not talking go buy yourself some Mikimoto pearls and a new Cartier watch and you’ll feel all better, well if you have a spare trillion dollars, (and again, approximate) lying around, you feel free to do that. But us typical working class folk can swing by our nearest Forever 21 or Target and get real serious on the jewelry section. A lot of the time people go shopping for a certain accessory, which makes sense, but the quickest way to liven up your wardrobe is to buy something a little more out there, “costume” as some may say. You will be amazed at how a floral belt and a studded bracelet can bring 5 new outfits to your brain. The best part? You aren’t expecting this jewelry to last very long because it’s fun and you are taking a risk so you can buy a $6.00 pair of earrings and wear them until they brake, and they will have served you well. I’ve added some pictures of some great options for wardrobe spicers, if you need color or shimmer or anything under the sun, you can find it in an accessory.

A note of apology and promise… That sounds morbid…

Hello all! Let me begin by saying how sorry I am that it’s been so long since I posted anything on this page. I work 3 jobs and have little free time and when I do have a moment to myself I find myself wanting to spend it with the people I love, not blogging. BUT! I do really enjoy blogging and having people say that they like reading it, so instead of trying to post something every single day, which is just impossible, I am going to post every Monday. Hopefully it will be a reason to look forward to that ever dreaded day. But, I do post daily items on my Twitter account (@AlexBstyle) so if you want little fashion-y things from me daily, follow me on there or “Like” my stylist Facebook page, (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Alexandra-Brandt-Barnard-Fashion-JournalistStylist/176108892492537) I look forward to posting this coming Monday, and as ever, if someone needs fashion advice or help with their wardrobe, message me on my Facebook and I would be MORE than happy to help!

Hey kiddos, long time no talk! It’s time for an outfit post wouldn’t ya say? Well it’s been a complete rain attack here in MN so my outfit was based off rain boots! Then the socks from American Apparel because I wanted to sass up the boots, let’s face it, rain boots aren’t the most endearing outfit choice. I went with a Free People floral dress because the day needed some color, and it is my duty to bring it! Finally a sweater from Nordstrom to keep me warm and add another color to the mix. I wore a vintage bracelet and Forever 21 earrings with debonaire bunnies on them. Also, do you like my kitchen? Very homie I’d say… JK its Ikea. Bravo to the boyfriend for taking a picture of this crazy face!

That is that! Glad to be back y’all!

Afternoon to all! It is a beauuuutiful day here in MN and I am sweating my arse off because I am wearing tights… Suffer for fashion right? Right. Today I thought, how could I look like a cross between a school girl that doesn’t know where she is and a hipster that ordered a lemonade but received an Arnold Palmer? Clearly by layering a denim dress over a silk shirt with a Peter Pan collar! (Sidebar, I cannot express how much I LOVE the fact that it is called a Peter Pan collar!) It started with the shirt (Aryn K.), I adore this shirt because the top is so sweet and interesting, but it is a little short so I always have to wear it with high waisted stuff which gets a little repetitive, so I thought I would mix it up and wear a dress (Urban Outfitters) over it. Then I needed tights (Hue) to add color and the shoes (Steve Madden) to add color on color. I love wearing my hair like this because it takes 3 seconds and I really like the messy hair with a sweet outfit look. The headband is from Athropologie, as are the earrings. The bracelets are Urban Outfitters (green) and Ted Baker (tortoise shell). A final Summer touch, Kate Spade sunglasses.

Now onward! Enjoy the beautiful weather!

Welcome to my blog fishermen and fisherwomen! If you don’t live in MN you probably don’t know why I just referred to you as that (But do you ever really know why I refer to you as anything? No.) It is the fishing opener here in MN, which is a big deal to everyone, especially me… Not really. But it brings joy to many, so matzel tov! If I had a dress with fish on it, I would have worn it. But, I don’t. So instead I wore florals and polka dots! The shorts (Ella Moss) were the beginning of it all, they are extremely comfortable yet precious, a good combo indeed. Then I went with the floral shirt (Tulle) because the colors worked with the black and tan of the shorts but they added in the purple and blue, which I liked. I needed a little sweater (HTNaturals) because the neckline of the tank with the waist of the shorts just wasn’t working for me, so adding another color, I went with this green doily-style number, it’s good for this season, not to hot, not to light… For jewelry I went with hot pink (bright pink bangle: Betsey Johnson, soft pink bangle: Sequin, earrings: Karma) because the clothes were feeling slightly Fall-esque. Then these metallic shoes (Fossil) to wrap it up!

Happy fishing! To the rest of you, happy… Living!

Hey birds! Today was a fun outfit day because there were foxes all over my dress and how can you not be in a good mood engulfed in foxes, well cartoon foxes anyway, being engulfed in real fixes would be quite frightening! So it started with the foxes (from Karma), as most things do. Then I went with the vest (Urban Outfitters, mens) so’s to match with the teal in the dress. The belt came with the dress actually, HIYO! These flatforms (Marc Jacobs) are so comfortable and they make me so tall, which is always a plus, when you’re 5’5”. Betsey Johnson earrings, because they are mismatched and I was feeling a bit matchy matchy with the colors, needed to mix it up a bit. A floral and a soft pink bangle to bring in more pattern, and the ever bright and floral Betsey Johnson necklace to color it up once again! I also had a bright pink rose clip in my hair. The sunglasses are Cole Haan. I also put a picture up of my makeup where I look slightly cross eye, always lovely, because I put white eyeliner on and it just has such an amazing quality to it when it is done right, note that…

I added a picture of me and my amazing and fabulous Mother Kathryn because we were at an event at my work for Mothers Day and she is just incredible so I thought why not?!

Afternoon guys and dolls! I’ve got another outfit for you. After this post I am going to try and take multiple photos of the outfits I share because I think it gives a better idea of what it actually looks like! This outfit started with the dress, by Tulle, that I bought at Karma (the boutique I work at). I love love love the color, it seems to be kind of hard to find but looks really good on almost everyone and it just makes you think of sunshine and fresh flowers, well it does for me anyway. Then I needed to add a layer because I was going out to eat and everyone knows restaurants like to cool to -5 degrees, for some reason, makes it hard to eat when your tongue is sticking to your frozen fork… Anyway, I added on this sweater from Anthropologie (the best place to buy sweaters in my opinion) that gave the look a little bit of a print, very simple. I added on the studded belt from BCBG for some edge. Betsey Johnson earrings, Kate Spade necklace, some Target bracelets and Dior tan shoes to finish it of and boom, outfit complete! Photo and place to pose cred to mah boyfriend Dan, you da best!
